Gym fixes triple gold for Sheffield based boxers

Three 2012 Olympic hopefuls who train at Sheffield's state-of-the-art boxing hall have secured triple European gold in Denmark.

Khalid Yafai, Bradley Saunders and Tommy Stubbs, who are all based at the English Institute of Sport - Sheffield (EIS Sheffield), won gold medals at the European Union Championships in Odense.

Khalid Yafai and Bradley Saunders were both part of the GB squad in Beijing and trained at EIS Sheffield in the build up to the 2008 Olympic Games (Pictured above).
Tommy Stubbs is part of the new GB Podium and Development Squad, which is using EIS Sheffield's boxing hall ahead of the 2012 London Games and was recently opened by Sports Minister Gerry Sutcliffe.

Khalid Yafai's success in Denmark was most impressive, with three wins - including one stoppage - by at least 10 points. The flyweight is now unbeaten since his early defeat to the top Cuban Andriy Laffita in Beijing.

Light-welterweight Bradley Saunders, also unbeaten since Beijing, put in a superb performance to breeze past former World Championships bronze medallist Gyula Kate from Hungary 13-3.

Tommy Stubbs, a light-flyweight fighting for the first time in the tournament after two byes, overwhelmed Poland's Lukasz Maszczyk 14-3 for the biggest win of his career.

Earlier this year, the British Amateur Boxing Association (BABA) confirmed its commitment to boxing in Sheffield by signing a four year deal with venue operator Sheffield International Venues (SIV) for the 2012 squad to be based at EIS Sheffield.

Paul Hudson, general manager of EIS Sheffield, said: "This event marked the beginning of the build-up to the London 2012 Olympics and the EIS Sheffield-based boxers couldn't have got off to a better start.

"It demonstrates that the investment made into the world class facility by UK Sport and Sport England through Lottery funding and the commitment from the BABA on its goals towards 2012 combined with SIV's superb sporting offer is already starting to produce results."
