Turner to test sprinters at the EISS
British hurdler Andy Turner has vowed to show the country’s top sprinters no mercy when he lines up against them at the Norwich Union World Trials and UK Championships in Sheffield this weekend.

The English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EISS) will host the event for the fifth consecutive year on February 9 and 10 and European and Commonwealth bronze medallist Turner is feeling in fine form.

He has just returned from UK Athletics’ warm-weather training camp in South Africa, however, an injury to a disc in his back means the Sale Harrier will not compete in the 60m hurdles this weekend, preferring instead to stretch his legs in the 200m.

“The physio has instructed me to hold out on racing over hurdles for a little bit, so unfortunately the Norwich Union World Trials were just a little bit too soon,” said Turner.

“But I am fine to sprint and I’m keen to get into a competitive race.  I’m not going there just to make the final though, I want to win the thing and I know that I have the ability to run under 21 seconds which is what it’s going to take for victory.”

In 2007 Turner ran an impressive 60mH in Sheffield to take first place, but he narrowly missed out on a medal at the consequent European Indoor Championships in Birmingham .  This year though he views the indoor season solely as a platform for Olympic glory.

“I’m undecided about competing at the World Indoors at the moment and obviously because I won’t be running in the hurdles at the trials I can’t get automatically selected.

“If I end up running quickly and get selected then I will think about doing it, but it’s not my main target.  This year is all about the Olympic Games in Beijing .

“For me the indoor season is practice for the outdoor one.  My start is the worst part of my race, so I do the indoors to try and master that, which will push me on outdoors.”

And that mean’s that Britain ’s current number one hurdler Allan Scott could possibly head to Valencia unchallenged.

“Allan is wicked indoors, he knows that and everyone else does too.  I’m sure he could probably run even quicker as well.  He’s a great guy and hopefully he will go to the World’s and do something good.”

Tickets for the Norwich Union World Trials & UK Championships at the Sheffield EIS are sold out.
