Jessica Ennis believes Sheffield will witness British athletics’ new found strength in depth when the city hosts the Norwich Union World Indoor Trials.
The English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EISS) will host the event for the fifth consecutive year on February 9 and 10, with heptathlete Ennis set to compete in a number of individual events.
And the Commonwealth bronze medallist believes there will be plenty to cheer the sport over the course of the weekend.
She said: “I always enjoy competing in Sheffield because my friends and family can all come and support and also I’m extremely familiar with the venue.
“The great thing about a competition like the Norwich Union World Trials is that it showcases just what depth we are starting to produce in British athletics, which is particularly encouraging for the future of the sport.
“It means there is as much emphasis on being the best in Britain as there is the world, and that can only be good for competition. It’s also great for spectators because they are treated to a real spectacle.
“I’m personally hoping to improve upon what I did last year, and set some PBs. I’ve been working hard over the winter and this is a great chance to see how I’ve progressed.
“Hopefully the EISS will witness the first of many great performances by British athletes this indoor season.”
Ennis will compete in three events at the Trials, the shot on the Saturday and the 60m hurdles and high jump on the Sunday.
A handful of tickets remain for Saturday’s programme. Call 08000 556 056 or visit www.ukathletics.net
