Sheffield judo club secures sporting accolade
A judo club based at one of
Sheffield’s state-of-the-art sports venues has been honoured with a prestigious national award.
The EIS-Sheffield Judo Club has achieved the Sport England Clubmark bronze award – a quality accreditation for sports clubs with junior sections.
The club has been operating out of the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EISS) since the facility opened in the city in 2003. It became part of the EISS network of sports clubs in October 2006.
Clubmark accreditation is designed to guarantee standards in participation, child protection, sports equality and ethics and club management.
It was awarded to the EIS-Sheffield Judo Club by the British Judo Association – one of 10 National Governing Bodies based at the EISS.
Eric Theaker, Chairman of the EIS-Sheffield Judo Club, said: “We are delighted to receive this award. It recognises best practice within the club and highlights the progress we have made since forming at the EISS three years ago.
“We have worked extremely hard to achieve this accreditation and it will guarantee our players many benefits including further club development, high levels of coaching and standards of safety in terms of practice areas.
“It will also improve our chances of being awarded sporting grants in the future and allow us to further develop our links with local schools.
“Our work doesn’t stop here though. We will have to reapply for accreditation every two years and we are hopeful the next renewal will be for a silver award. There is plenty of work still to be done and our long term aim is to work towards application for a gold Clubmark award.
“The EISS is a fantastic facility which we are so lucky to have in the city. We are committed to the continual development of the club and working with schools to encourage more youngsters into the sport.”
The EIS-Sheffield Judo Club caters for a wide range of junior and adult competitors from novice to elite level. It runs every Monday for juniors 6pm – 7.30pm and for adults from 7.30pm – 9.30pm.
