| Sheffield Based GB Boxers On The Road to Beijing Five |
SHEFFIELD-BASED GB BOXERS ON THE ROAD TO
BEIJING
Victorious Sheffield-based boxers have returned to the city after qualifying for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
Frankie Gavin, who became the first British boxer in history to win a gold medal at the world championships, joined fellow qualifiers Brad Saunders, Joe Murray,
David
Price and Tony Jeffries at the welcome home reception at the English Institute of Sport-Sheffield (EISS).
The reception brought together the GB Olympic boxing squad and their coaches, plus several of
Sheffield
’s most famous professional boxers, including current world champions Clinton Woods, Junior Witter and former champion Jonny Nelson, plus legendary trainer Brendan Ingle.
All five GB boxers, who needed to reach the quarter finals of the world championships to automatically qualify for
Beijing
, train at EISS following the Amateur Boxing Association of England’s decision to relocate the GB squad to the SIV-managed venue last year.
The move was another step in the city’s plan to generate and support potential future medal winners for 2012 which means that
Sheffield
is now in with a fighting chance of producing the next Amir Khan with the ABAE’s the city-based programme of grass roots, community and elite boxing development in full swing.
Gary Clifton, Sheffield Programme Manager 2012, said: “This is fantastic news for boxing in the city, putting
Sheffield
firmly on the map not only as a city of boxing but also as a breeding ground for future Olympians.
“The city is now clearly playing a major role in creating a world class talent development and training environment for amateur boxers aspiring to represent
Great Britain
in the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Games.” |
