IS Sheffield to host Egyptian volleyball training camp

Egypt’s volleyball stars will be heading to South Yorkshire next week for a week long international training camp and competition.

The Great Britain Men's Volleyball squad will host the camp at their home training base the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield (EIS Sheffield) from 28 July – 3 August.

It will conclude with an international fixture between the two teams at EIS Sheffield on Saturday 2 August at 5pm.Kenny Barton Performance Programme Manager for British Volleyball said, “The game once again gives the opportunity to see the progress of the team following their exploits in the European Championships and European League at EIS Sheffield.

“The GB team has an impressive record for fixtures in the UK after beating Denmark in the European Championships, Norway in a warm up game and then Portugal and Greece in the European League. So we are hopeful of another winning performance in the game against the Egyptians.

“For anyone that has not experienced the power and excitement of international volleyball before this game provides the ideal opportunity to support the GB team and welcome the Egyptian team to Sheffield”.In addition to the public match, there will also be training games from Tuesday 29 July to Friday 1 August between the Egyptian and GB teams and a GB development squad.

Paul Hudson, general manager of EIS Sheffield, said: “International squads continue coming to EIS Sheffield because of the excellent facilities we can offer ahead of Beijing and beyond to 2012.

“Volleyball in Egypt has been making rapid progress and they are currently ranked 14th in the world and will be the African representative in the Olympic Games in Beijing later in August.”

Spectators are welcome at the international game. Tickets are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions (senior citizens, students or under 16s) and can be reserved by calling 0114 2235742. Alternatively they are available on the door.

• The GB women's team is currently on tour training and competing in the Dominican Republic before moving onto Puerto Rico. The trip started in Kazakhstan where they played in an international tournament and won three of the five games, one of which was against the hosts who will be at the Olympics in Beijing.
