| Eighth EISS-based boxer qualifies for Beijing |
‘Dynamite’ David Price has become the eighth Sheffield-based boxer to qualify for the Beijing Olympics.
Dave, who trains at the prestigious English Institute of Sport - Sheffield (EISS), secured his place at the August Games with a businesslike display of boxing defeating Romania's 2006 World Junior Champion Cristian Ciocan in Athens on Friday 11 April.
He won the super heavyweight contest on points with a combination of accurate punches and a calm under fire defensive performance.
Dave joins seven other EISS-based boxers on the trip to Beijing, who qualified either at the World Championships in Chicago last November or in Pescara in March 2008.
All eight boxers are now in full training at the Sheffield International Venues (SIV) facility and are fighting fit for a win ahead of the anticipated Olympics.
After the contest Dave, 24, from Liverpool, said: “It’s a dream come true – sweeter because of the length of time it's taken, which is a blessing in disguise as I'm competition hardened and mentally stronger for all the ‘aggro’. I'm convinced that I can win gold in Beijing.”
The GB squad has trained at the EISS since the Amateur Boxing Association of England’s relocation to the SIV-managed venue in 2006.
A delighted Terry Edwards, GB coach, said: “It's been a long road for David with lots of disappointments but it’s finally come for him. He's stayed strong and focused, not only is he going to Beijing, he will medal there.”
