Chinese table tennis stars compete in Sheffield

England’s leading table tennis players have been put through their paces by some of China’s top table tennis stars at a pre-Olympic training camp in Sheffield.

The Shanghai table tennis team sparred with the Sheffield-based England squad at the city’s prestigious English Institute of Sport (EISS) during a 10 day camp.

An 11-strong Shanghai squad, including two members of the Chinese national team, used the visit for vital match practice ahead of the 2008 Olympic European Qualification Tournament, which starts in Nantes, France on April 2.

The Shanghai Team included Duan Xiang, Zhang Geng, Wang Jialin, Gui Zhenqi, Zhang Minghui, Mao Xinhuan, Gao Xin, Zhang Yang, Sun Mo, Liu Shan and Song Jiaqi.

The English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) moved to the Sheffield International Venues-managed facility in August 2007 as part of the sport’s development plans ahead of London 2012.

Shanghai coach, (Duan Xiang) said: “We are very impressed by the facilities at the EISS and really enjoyed competing with the English Team. We look forward to taking part in the qualifiers in April.”

Steen Hansen at the ETTA/BTTF, said: “We were delighted to welcome the Shanghai squad to Sheffield. We often receive visits from other elite table tennis squads throughout the year and they are always hugely impressed with our fantastic facilities. The players benefit immensely from the visits in terms of confidence and technical development.”
